The Hidden Neighbors

Life Beneath the Desert Floor

Most visitors to the Mojave Desert never notice them. Small, silk-lined holes are scattered through the dry ground, tucked between rocks and grasses. It wasn't until I started paying closer attention that I realized these tiny openings belonged to some of my most fascinating neighbors—the desert tarantulas.

After sunset, as darkness settled over the Mojave, one of my hidden neighbors quietly emerged from its burrow.
